What is a Tintype?

The Tintype is a positive image formed by exposing a thin varnished sheet of iron coated with sensitized collodion (gun cotton dissolved in alcohol and ether) in a camera. This method was used almost exclusively for inexpensive portraiture. Often placed in a leather cases, Tintype were popular until about 1930.
